MSPC Newsletter - Term 2 Week 2, 6th May 2022
Principal
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Welcome to Term 2
Welcome back to the new term. We have already had multiple sporting teams represent the College in AFL, Tennis, Girls League Tag with Soccer, Rugby League and no doubt many more around the corner. It is fantastic to see our students involved in all aspects of College life. As well as sporting there will be cultural and academic extracurricular opportunities and I know that you will join me in encouraging the student in your care to take advantage of these opportunities.
ANZAC Day
Thank you to the parents and students who attended the Murwillumbah ANZAC Day March. Your attendance was a fitting tribute to the women and men who have served Australia in many capacities and countries around the world. Our students were standouts in both numbers and appearance. There are some photos of the Murwillumbah Parade later in this Newsletter.
Prayers for Doreen Arkins
Two of our long standing and dedicated staff Mrs Narelle Sherrah and Mrs Helen Loring, lost their mother last Sunday. We pray for Doreen Arkins that she is at peace in heaven and for her children, Helen, Narelle, Kaye and Brian, grandchildren and extended family, that they may remember the love and care that Doreen showed throughout her life. The Mount St Patrick community offers the family support during this difficult time. The following extract from Psalm 27, which is often used in Funeral services, is a prayer of hope and comfort.
May the choirs of angels come to greet her.
May they speed her to paradise.
May the Lord enfold her in His mercy.
May she find eternal life.
Mother’s Day
This Sunday 8th May is designated in Australia as Mother’s Day. It would be great if every day we remembered and thanked our mothers for all that they have done and sacrificed for us! Please spend time this Sunday remembering your mother, and those who have played a ‘mothering role’ in your life , whether they are alive or deceased, and give thanks for their gifts to you.
Be the Good and God Bless,
Paul Reidy

Murwillumbah Anzac Day March
The College was well represented by students, staff and students who are members of the local Cadet corps at the Murwillumbah Parade on Anzac Day. Thank you to those students and families who gave up some holiday time and made the effort to attend in their full dress uniform.
Nagle House Celebration
Mrs Van Den Driest, Mr McCulloch, Nagle House student leaders and House members presented a fantastically informative liturgy at the College Assembly on Thursday 28th April. Nano Nagle’s celebration day is 26th April which is the anniversary of her death in 1784. Those who delivered the liturgy told Nano’s story of establishing the Presentation Sisters to ‘shine light into the dark places’ in Ireland at the time through the power of education. All students at the Assembly were shown the special items, books, icons and symbols which are significant to Presentation People.
Catch-up IDs, Group and Sibling Photos on Friday 27th May
All students are to be in their full dress uniform for these photos. So if a student has prac PE or Sport timetabled on this day, Day 15, then they need to bring their sport uniform in their bags.

MINISTRY
Welcome back to Term 2. I hope all our Mt St Patrick College Community had a wonderful and restful holiday with family and friends.
A big thank you to Mrs Cathy Cripp’s Year 9 Youth Ministry Class for running our beautiful end of term Liturgy in the last week of Term 1. It was very special to be together as a community in the Sacred Heart Church and the students did a wonderful job.
There are some exciting Ministry events coming up this term, some of which were postponed from last term due to the floods.
Yer 11 Retreat/Leadership day
Year 11 have their Retreat/Leadership Day at the College on Friday the 6th May, run by the Passionist Youth Retreat Team. We wish them a fun and inspiring day of team building, leadership and exploring their faith.

The LEAD Conference is on at McAuley Catholic College, Grafton on the 19th and 20th May. Thank you to those Year 11 and 12 students who are attending. This will be a fantastic two-day gathering of students across the diocese, which will allow them to engage and meet other like-minded students and continue to build Catholic Community. Final information about this event has been sent to parents/guardians through Compass and directly to students attending via email.
IGNITE
The IGNITE launch event is on next Saturday 13th May at Dreamworld. Thank you to those students who are attending! This event is hosted by Ignite Youth and involves students enjoying Dreamworld for the day and a youth rally in the evening. Ignite Youth have hired Dreamworld exclusively for the night rally after it closes. We are organising transport to and from the event only. Please be aware that this is an external school event that teachers are providing transport for. Supervision during the day will be from Ignite Youth. They will be in bright shirts and there to assist participants in any way they need. Miss Grace Molloy and Mr Michael Levick will be there for the day.
Finally, just some upcoming dates later in the term. Street Retreat is on in Week 9 from the 23rd-26th June. This opportunity is only for Year 11 and 12 students. Curriculum
Term 2 is well underway and students are busy with their studies. Students are encouraged to be proactive with their learning and if they are unsure of content or expectations, they should discuss this with their teacher to seek clarification. Students should now have completed a home study planner and ensure they are doing their homework on a daily basis.
The start of term is always an important time for reminders. All students have a Mount St Patrick College diary and are required to take it to all classes. The diary has two main purposes:
Firstly, it provides a means by which students can organise their homework and study. All students are given homework regularly and this should be recorded on the appropriate page of the diary. Assignment submission dates should also be recorded in the diary.
The diary provides a means of communication between the College and parents and carers. Parents and carers are asked to sign the diary each week and are welcome to use the diary as a means of communication with teachers. Teachers will sign the diary on a weekly basis.
Recommended hours of homework and study are detailed in the College diary as follows:
Years 7 and 8 - 1 hour per night
Years 9 and 10 - 1.5 hours per night
Year 11 - 2 hours per night
Year 12 - 3 hours per night
Planning ahead for Term 2, students can access all information regarding their assessments via the Assessment Portal which is found on the MSPC Moodle Site.
Year 12 students and Year 11 Accelerated students have been advised that the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) has published the HSC Timetable and this is available on their website, along with information for practical and performance subjects. Students can find important information and web links on the year page of the MSPC Assessment Portal.
PLEASE NOTE: The following is an assessment overview for Weeks 3 and 4 of Term 2. Students should check their assessment calendar for accuracy and to ensure that changes have not been made since publishing this guide.

HOCKEY SUCCESS
Fiona Laybutt has been named in the U18 Australian Women's Futures Squad.
The pick of Australian female hockey Under 18 talent who will be at their peak to succeed at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games have been selected in the 2022 Men’s and Women’s Futures Squads.
The Futures Program and Under 18 age group is the first time players are nationally identified.
The significance of those named in the squads is pertinent with the green and gold runway of major sporting events over the next decade, highlighted by the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Victoria and 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
Fiona will be part of a six-part program that includes individual athlete performance planning, online technical and tactical sessions, dual career, mental health and wellbeing, and a training camp in Canberra in October.
The players will have one eye on pushing for selection for the Men’s and Women’s Junior Word Cups in December 2023 and the following edition in 2025.
QSCHOOL’S AUSSIE RULES REPORT
JUNIOR GIRLS AND BOYS – CHAMPIONS
The Junior boys and girls comprising Year 7, 8 and 9 students, travelled to Byron Bay to participate in the Q School’s AFL Cup. The first games of the day were played in wet and slippery conditions, resulting in the boys having a narrow win over arch rivals Lindisfarne Anglican School. As the grounds dried and the skies cleared the boys were able to show their superior skills with confident wins over St Joseph’s, Banora Point and Xavier College, Skennars Head.
This dream run qualified us for a Grand Final match against an also undefeated Kingscliff High school team. This Final turned out to be an anti-climax as Mount St Pats completely dominated the opposition. Running out winners with 7 goal and six behinds, 48 points to nil. All games were played in the right spirit and the sportsmanship was always the main priority. The better players on the day were Matthew Ryan (Player of the Series), Ty Lockwood, Angus Lindsay, Sam Hynes and Norm Fraser. The boys look forward to progressing to the next level on the Gold Coast.
They junior girls represented Mount Saint Patrick College exceptionally well, setting the standard for sportsmanship, team work and team spirit. In wet and slippery conditions, Ari Sampson-Jones was best afield in game 1 against Lindisfarne and the girls were victorious by two goals. The girls cruised to victory over Maclean High School and St Josephs with help from Tilda Hewett kicking multiple goals and being the major goal-scorer throughout the day.
The Grand Final brought the toughest encounter for the day, matching up against Lindisfarne for the second time in windy conditions, who proved to be very competitive. This was a hard fought victory by 6 points, with only one goal being scored for the game by Ari Sampson-Jones after the half-time siren. Best player for the Grand Final and Most Valuable Player for the day went to Lucy Grant who stood up tirelessly in defence and helped lead the girls to victory.
Rick Van Den Driest, Jake Hetherington (Coaches)
SENIOR GIRLS
Our senior girls team was one of 7 schools who played in the Q Schools Cup this year at Byron Bay. In pool A, MSPC scored solid wins over Banora Point High School and Maclean High School keeping both scoreless. This put us up against the winners of pool B Lindisfarne Anglican School (our arch rivals who we narrowly beat in the final last year). With the aid of a strong breeze in the first half we were level at half time before our girls were overrun in the second. Losing to Lindisfarne’s 5 goals and 1 behind (31 points) to our 2 goals and 2 behinds (14 points)
All games were played in the right spirit and all should be proud of their efforts throughout the day.
Rick Van Den Driest (Coach)
SENIOR BOYS
The senior boys consisting of Year 10, 11 and 12 students had a hard fought day at Byron Bay, finishing 5th overall in the division. The results did not at all reflect the boy’s effort, sportsmanship and overall demeanor they displayed throughout their games. The first match of the day in wet and boggy conditions against Xavier College was determined by only two points, with a late goal from Xavier College giving them the win. Next up were Maclean High School where the boys played a great brand of team footy which resulted in a nail-biting draw. Unfortunately, with these two close results, the Finals were set where Mount St Patrick College would be battling for 5th against both Banora Point High School and Saint Joseph’s, Banora. With the sun now out and the ground drying up the boys went on to beat both of these teams comfortably and secure 5th place. Best players for the day included Charles Elliott, Michael Todd, Aidan Laybutt, Sean Carney and Will Malloy.

DIOCESAN OPEN SOCCER and NRCC Rugby League
Unfortunately, due to rain these events have had to be cancelled on the eve of the competition. Disappointing for all involved.
DIOCESAN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
GIRLS
Congratulations to all the girls who competed in the Diocesan Tennis last Thursday 28th April. All put in great effort on what turned out to be a hot day. Mt St Patrick College came away with some fantastic results. The junior girls (Tara O’Donnell and Charlotte Waddell) won two out of four of their matches, showing great teamwork and sportsmanship during each of their matches. Our Open Girls A (Chloe Martin and Meisha Dywer) and Open Girls B (Alexis Pelikan and Ciara Dwyer) showed, yet again, that they are a force to be reckoned with. As a result of three out of three convincing wins from both teams, the Open Girls will again progress through to the NSWCCC Tennis Championships in Bathurst. Well done girls and good luck in Bathurst!
Ashlie Pinter (Coach)
BOYS
On Thursday 28th April, our boys tennis teams travelled to Arkinstall Park to compete in the Dio Tennis Competition. For the boys, it was a tough competition, with many strong teams from across the Diocese. Our Open Boys A (Ben Wilson and Norm Fraser) and Open Boys B (Arlo Kirk and Lachlan Tuckwell) both acquitted themselves well across the day. With all four members in Year 9, they gave away size and strength to many of their opponents. They achieved quite well with the Open team coming mid table.
Our Junior Boys team (Bernie Fraser and Reuben Levings) had a similar experience. With both the boys from Year 7, they played well but were often outmatched with size and strength.
Hopefully the boys can continue to play together and we will have a real chance in the next couple of years.
Michael Levick (Coach
GIRLS LEAGUE TAG
Open Girls
On Monday 2nd May, we had 4 teams travel to Murwillumbah High School for Girls League Tag. Our Open girls were very enthusiastic and put up a good fight against tough competition. We also had a lot of girls who were playing up from under 16’s and playing back to back games but were still showing great effort and resilience. The team worked well together, and continued to improve each game.
Intermediate Girls
The Under 16’s girls League Tag Team participated in the Gala Day at Murwillumbah High School on 2nd May. The girls showed great determination and the Mt St Patrick fighting spirit playing back to back games with little to no rest. The girls proved they can mix it with the best in the Northern Rivers and displayed exceptional sportsmanship and behaviour when representing the College. A great day was had by all.
Junior Girls
Two under 14s teams participated in the Junior girls League Tag Competition. It was a tough competition but both teams showed great teamwork and enthusiasm with the Blue team winning two of their three matches and the Gold team winning one match with close games in the other two matches. It was a fantastic result from both teams which left the girls in high spirits at the end of the day. The skills and dedication shown by the girls will hopefully continue to grow and strengthen if they can continue to play together over the next few years. Well done girls!!
