MSPC Newsletter - Term 2 Week 4, 19th May 2022
Principal
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Love One Another
I spent last weekend in Orange, about four hours west of Sydney. On Sunday I searched when and where mass was on and found St Brendan’s, Mullion Creek, which was not a town but a locality, like our own Crystal Creek. St Brendan’s Church is a tin shed (picture below) about 5 metres by 10 metres, I was told later it was an old shearing quarters that was donated in 1916 for use as a church.
The church was fairly full with about 30 people in it and there was no hiding at the back like we do sometimes, as the church was so small. I was welcomed by the parishioner beside me, who told me that they had the Bishop celebrating mass today. It is quite special that the Bishop would celebrate mass away from the Cathedral in a small country church. It told the community that they were valued. In the Gospel, Jesus told us to “love another” and in the homily the Bishop told the story of an old priest who’s homily every week was “love one another, love one another”. When asked, “Why do you have the same homily every week?”, he replied, “When you do love each other I’ll stop”. A short message that can be difficult to put into practice.
St Brendan’s Mullion Creek is a rich and welcoming community. Strong communities do welcome new people, have shared goals and beliefs and do love one another, which I hope we strive to achieve at Mount St Pat’s. We have the example of our Presentation Charism, the humble, hardworking and selfless example of Nano and the sisters who followed her. It is all of our jobs to continue that charism.
Suspicious Vehicles
I sent an email to our community about suspicious vehicles that have been seen near schools and bus stops in our area. I ask students to please look out for each other and not to approach strangers. If you suspect something is not right please speak to the police and the school.
COVID-19
There are many covid-19 cases in the community. Please continue to exercise caution both at school and in the wider community. If a student is a close contact then they are able to attend school if they do not have symptoms but we ask that we are notified and that they wear a mask.

MINISTRY
MEET OUR YMOS
Emma
Hey Everyone, I’m Emma and I am a YMO at MSPC. I attended Mt St Pat’s from Year 7 to 12 and graduated in 2021. I was very involved with the ministry opportunities that the school provided. I was a part of the ministry classes in Years 9 and 10. It was while I was a part of these classes that I decided I wanted to become a YMO when I graduated. So far I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as YMO. I love creating relationships with students and helping them on their journey through high school.
Miki
Hey Everyone, I’m Mikayla and I am a second year YMO. I graduated from Trinity Catholic College, Lismore in 2020 and last year I was at St. Paul’s Catholic Secondary College, Kempsey. I have been very involved within ministry in my high school years; in community service; the Trinity Ministry Team; Proclaim Events and so many other opportunities. I wanted to become a YMO to assist and guide other students in their faith and school journey, like my YMO’s helped me. Some things I love most about being a YMO is the relationship I get to establish with the students and my YMO partner, Emma.
IGNITE LAUNCH WRAP UP!
Last Saturday 14th May 20 students went to Dreamworld to participate in the Ignite Launch event. It was a wet day, but everyone made the best of it, enjoying rides, food and some fun. The night time event was wonderful with a buffet dinner, performances, and talks from Emmanuel Worship. A big thank you to all the students who attended: Saskia Gray, Austen Capner, Amelia Keyes, Conan Twomey, Josie Farrell, Leo Thomas, Bridget Hudson, Enya McCarthy, Caitlyn Bice, Maya Rogers, Summer Gibbons, Keira Lesleighter, Ava Browning, Alexis Pelikan, Kim Scard, Miranda Larkin, Lara Wegemund, Emma Loughman, Halle McClymont and Tenika Twomey. A VERY BIG thank you to Mr Michael Levick for driving the College bus to and from Dreamworld, and for spending the day with the students and Miss Molloy!
UPCOMING EVENTS
Street Retreat
In 2022, Mt St Patrick College Year 11 students from our school will join students from each of the other parish secondary schools in attending the Street Retreat experience in Brisbane. This experience will form, equip and empower students to return to their parish communities with a passion for social justice and greater sense of the call of Jesus Christ to serve the poor.
Participants in the Street Retreat will spend from Thursday night 23rd to Sunday lunch 26th June working with a range of social justice initiatives in Brisbane. Their participation may make a small contribution to those being served – but the event is first and foremost an exercise in discipleship formation.
Participants will find the activities on the Street Retreat challenging and, possibly, confronting. Many activities run either very late at night or very early in the morning. The retreat will culminate in a celebration of Sunday Eucharist Mass. In addition, all participants must commit to a follow up Social Justice activity to be held in their own parish/school community following the Brisbane formation experience. Details of these activities will be made available to students upon their selection. All Year 11 students have been emailed an application form which needs to be returned to Miss Molloy or our YMOs by 9:00am Monday 23rd May. Only six students are able to attend (three male and three female).
Ignite Conference
This exciting conference is back again in September 2022. The CSO will be organising a trip which is open to students from Years 7-12. The trip will be subsidised by the CSO to make it more affordable and accessible. Student participants will be asked to make a co-contribution of $245.00. This contribution will go towards the registration cost. Transport and accommodation are fully subsidised. To secure your registration for Ignite, students will need to collect a form from Miss Molloy or the YMOs and return it by Friday 10th June. A payment of $245.00 (non-refundable) and electronic consent form will need to be processed through COMPASS. Registration online using the coupon code provided on the permission note is required as part of the application.
Further details on the conference are available at: igniteconference.com.au
YEAR 11 RETREAT/LEADERSHIP DAY
On Friday 6th May all Year 11 students participated in a Retreat/Leadership day run by the Passionist Youth Ministry Team. It was a great day connecting with each other, playing games and learning a bit more about how to be good leaders.
Year 11 said they enjoyed:
“Having fun with my friends and learning more about my year”.
“Being able to connect with most of the grade, listen to their opinions on common matters and share the love”.
“Learning other people's interests and talking with others I don't normally talk too. And the really fun activities/games”.
“The conversations I had with some people I’ve never spoken too”.
“The way our group came together and bonded”.
A big thank you to Year 11 for getting involved and participating so well in the day. Thanks to Mrs Louise Shields, Mr Rick Van Den Driest, Miss Molloy and the YMOs for spending the day with Year 11.
MASS ON THURSDAY MORNING
You might not be aware, but each Thursday Morning Fr Peter says mass for our staff, students and Parishioners at 8.15am. Students are most welcome to attend as it is a shorter Mass and we are all back in time for homeroom. This is a lovely option for students wishing to attend Mass and to start their day. If students have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Molloy. This is completely optional and all are welcome!

Curriculum
Term 2 is well underway and students are busy with their studies. The weeks leading up to an Assessment Tasks are important for building confidence in preparing students for the assessments. Students have been provided with study guides and preparation materials by their teachers. If students are unsure of what is required, they should seek advice from their teachers. There are many helpful online resources that can also assist parents to help their child to be organised, confident and assessment ready. Implementing a balanced home study routine can play an important part in this process.
The following is an assessment overview for Weeks 5 and 6 for Term 2. Students should regularly check their assessment calendar for accuracy and to ensure that changes have not been made since publishing. Study planners are available for students to download on the MSPC Assessment Portal.
Students in Years 8, 9 and 10 will receive their assessment schedules shortly. These dates may change slightly once the assessments have been timetabled. Students will be notified of this.
DRAFT Assessment Block dates for Years 8, 9 and 10:
Year 8: 30-05-22 - 03-06-22 (commencing Week 6)
Year 9: 06/06/22 to 10/06/22 (commencing Week 7)
Year 10: 06/06/22 to 10/06/22 (commencing Week 7)
Students in Years 11 and 12 will be notified of draft dates for their Assessment Block shortly. Again, these dates may change slightly once the assessments have been timetabled. Students will be notified of this.
DRAFT Assessment dates for Years 11 and 12:
Year 11: 08/06/22 to 17/06/22 (Week 7 & 8)
Year 12: 08/06/22 to 17/06/22 (Week 7 & 8)
If students require a variation to assessment, they should complete the online Assessment Variation Application Form for each subject. Students can access all information regarding their assessments via the Assessment Portal which is found on the MSPC Assessment Portal.
Parents and carers, please note that a family social event or holiday would not be considered a valid reason for an extension or exemption to an assessment.

FROM THE SPORTS DESK
LISMORE DIO SOCCER REPRESENTATIVE
Congratulations to Elizabeth Warne from Year 11 who has gained selection in the Lismore Diocesan Soccer Team for the second year running. Elizabeth will travel to Sydney to join with the team to compete in the NSWCCC Championships. From here a NSWCCC team will be selected to compete further. We wish Elizabeth the best of luck in Sydney next week. The competition will be played over two days Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th May.
POSTPONMENTS
- Rain has again caused havoc. Our girls Bill Turner Trophy had to postpone their scheduled match from Monday 9th to this Friday 20th The consistent weather event has meant we have had to transfer the game to Walter Peate Oval in Kingscliff.
- The Boys Bill Turner Cup team had to scramble to get their game played on Monday 9th May by transferring to Walter Peate also. This game had also been postponed twice for rain and it simply had to be played. MSPC got the win which means the team will now play Round 3 today Thursday 19th May, again at Walter Peate Oval in Kingscliff.
- Open Rugby League had to be postponed as the rain has caused fields to be shut in Lismore. A new date is being investigated for this one. Yet to be conformed but could be early June. Keep posted. Keep watching this space.
BILL TURNER CUP WIN
In rainy conditions on Monday 9th May, after a last minute venue change, the Bill Turner Cup boys team played their second match. St Joseph's College Banora were a tough opposition, but the MSPC boys dominated a scoreless first half. Early in the second half we found the back of the net and punched in 3 goals to win 3-0 in an excellent team effort.
The boys are playing really good Football, using the width of the field and playing like a team that has been together for much longer than they have. We now face Lindisfarne today Thursday 19th of May, in what should be a challenging match. Fingers crossed we can put our best foot forward and progress deeper into the Competition.

YR 11 PD/H/PE & SLR CAMP
In Week 3, 38 Year 11 PDHPE and SLR students and 4 staff members travelled 2.5 hours to Lake Moogerah for a 3 day Camp. As part of the curriculum, the group participated in a range of activities such as Archery Tag, Mountain Bike Riding and Canoeing. They were also responsible for preparing and cooking all of their own meals. If the physical challenges presented were not enough, the weather certainly tested all of the ‘campers’. Heavy rain persisted non-stop, almost from departure until the time we eventually arrived home. Instead of dampening the enthusiasm of the students, the weather acted as a catalyst to bring the group even closer. Not one complaint was heard throughout the duration of the Camp. The conditions certainly galvanized the group and enabled relationships to be formed and flourish, as a result. This attitude exemplified the ‘Mt St Pat’s’ spirit.
