MSPC Newsletter - Term 2 Week 2, 29th April 2021
Principal
Dear Parents/Caregivers
Greg Culnane
Mr Greg Culnane, one of our College Librarians, was involved in an accident that has left him in a very serious condition and I ask that you keep him in your prayers. Mr Culnane has been a fixture at the College for over 40 years and is a passionate Mt St Patrick person. I am sure he would be very grateful for your kind thoughts and prayers.
Change - conscious and intentional
I spoke to the College last week about how it takes a conscious decision to change what we do or how we behave. Any decision that we make has to be deliberate, we have to have thought about it and we must want to do it. I cannot just hope for change, I have to plan how I am going to put it into action. If the thing we want to change is part of our normal behaviour, it is probably a bad habit and it will require some work to change. Some of the expectations that we have as a Catholic school in regards to how we treat each other or wear the uniform, might be seen as being counter-cultural and therefore not normal. Again it takes a conscious effort to change. I hope that we have opportunities to reflect on how we are going and be grateful for the good and be able to act to remedy areas of concern as required. As with most worthwhile changes we must be intentional and put in the work to achieve them.
Mothers Day Breakfast
The College P & F have initiated a Mother’s Day Breakfast to be held at the Gilbey Foyer between 7.30 and 8.30 am on Friday 7th May. Our College SRC will be assisting in thanking our terrific mothers for all they have done and continue to do in our lives. All mothers of College students are invited to attend. There is a flyer attached to the newsletter that includes a link to an RSVP. We would love to see as many mums as possible attend.
Proclaim Day
All Lismore Diocesan schools will be taking part in Staff Proclaim on next Wednesday 5th May. This is an important part of staff formation in Catholic schools. As such this is a pupil free day. I thank you for your support of these initiatives to build the culture at our College.
Be the Good & God Bless

Did you have breakfast today?
It is becoming more common that students are not eating breakfast before school. Maybe they forget or run out of time as they rush out the door to catch the bus. Many studies have linked eating breakfast with good health, better memory, alertness and concentration. That is why it is so important that MSPC students have something to eat before they start their school day so that they can focus and learn in class.
The SRC run Breakfast Club at the Gilbey Centre from 8 – 8.40am most Fridays and the College Canteen is open from 8.15am if students want to purchase healthy food, fruit or drinks before school. Parents/students could also take advantage of flexischools online ordering to order a breakfast in advance for their student/s.
Term 2 is traditionally a busy time in schools. The College community is looking forward to the following community–building opportunities:
Staff Proclaim – All staff in Lismore Diocesan Catholic schools on Wed 5th May
Year 7 Transitus – 12 Year 7 students to Evans Heads on 6th & 7th May
Nagle Day - Celebrating Nagle House's special day at the College Assembly 6th May
Mothers’ Day Breakfast – from 7.30 – 8.30am at the Gilbey Centre on Frid 7th May
Blue and green themed Mufti Day – Frid 14th May
200th Anniversary of Catholic Education – Mass at Cathedral on Mon 24th May
Creative and Performing Arts Showcase from 7pm on Tues 1st & Wed 2nd June

PROCLAIM LISMORE STUDENTS……...YEAR 11 STREET RETREAT
Proclaim Lismore Students aims to provide a comprehensive continuum of Intentional Student Discipleship Programs across the Diocese for students from Year 5 to Year 12. These gatherings aim to bring Catholic secondary students together to meet like-minded peers and to celebrate and meet with other young people who practice their faith.
In 2021, 6 Year 11 students from our school will join students from each of the other parish secondary schools in attending the Street Retreat experience in Brisbane. This experience will form, equip and empower students to return to their parish communities with a passion for social justice and greater sense of the call of Jesus Christ to serve the poor.
Participants in the Street Retreat will spend from Thursday night 17th June to Sunday lunch 20th June working with a range of social justice initiatives in Brisbane. Their participation may make a small contribution to those being served – but the event is first and foremost an exercise in discipleship formation.
Participants will find the activities on the street retreat challenging and possibly confronting. Many activities run either very late at night or very early in the morning. The retreat will culminate in a celebration of Sunday Eucharist. In addition, all participants must commit to a follow up Social Justice activity to be held in their own parish/school community following the Brisbane formation experience. Details of these activities will be made available to students upon their selection.
In discerning which students might participate in this retreat experience, the CSO has recommended the following selection criteria:
- Catholic students who can demonstrate involvement in their parish.
- Catholic students who have attended previous student discipleship programs.
- Students who exhibit the following attributes:
o a strong sense of social justice
o initiative
o common sense
o a mature character
A number of MSPC students have already expressed an interest in this event. We can, however, only offer 6 places. Any student who would like to be considered is asked to write a brief statement supporting their nomination on the information sheets provided by Mr O’Donohue, and available at the front office. Attention should be given to the stated selection criteria. Nominations should be handed to Mr O’Donohue or the Office no later than Friday, 14th May.
Successful applicants will be asked to make a contribution of $50.00 towards the cost of this experience payable to the school office, as well as provide $5.00 to be donated to a worthy cause and collected on Thursday evening at Street Retreat.

Assistant Principal - Learning & Teaching
Welcome to Term 2 Learning and Teaching. We commence this term with semester reports for Years 11 and 12. These reports are important feedback for the students to reflect upon their learning. We ask that students read their reports and evaluate their progress. An individual goal can be set by each student to ensure growth. Parent/ Teacher and Student interviews are scheduled for Year 11 and 12 on Thursday 13th May commencing at 3.30pm in the Gilbey Hall. Please make yourself available to discuss your child’s learning. It is well documented that the partnership between the school and home is very important in student progress.
Year 7 Parent / Teacher / Student interviews take place on Thursday 27th May commencing at 3.30pm. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to meet their child’s teachers and discuss strategies to ensure growth in learning for our students. Often at these meetings parents can give the teachers valuable insights into how their child is feeling in the classes and strategies that can help the teacher with their child. We look forward to meeting Year 7 parents in the Gilbey Hall.
The staff commenced the term with a professional development day on this year’s focus which is to improve student writing. Data has indicated that across Australia student writing has declined. Could this be because of the increased use of computers? Mt St Patrick College is part of a Learning Collaborative working with other schools in the Diocese
On the PD day the staff completed 2 workshops:
- Introduction to Lynn Sharratt’s work on improving student literacy through the 14 parameters that focus on each child’s growth in literacy;
- In KLA groups staff focussed on designing criteria for a common writing rubric.
Literacy is the responsibility of all KLAs and it is important that all teachers have a commitment to improving literacy for all students.
I hope all students enjoy their learning in Term 2 and benefit from our focus on writing.

DIOCESAN NORTH SOCCER
Open Boys Soccer
On Wednesday 21st April, our senior squad of football players travelled to the Northern Rivers Football Academy to compete in the Diocesan North Football Competition.
The team included an experienced group of Year 11 and 12 boys who were an enthusiastic and committed side. The first game saw the boys come up against Woodlawn College. The game started with the boys knocking the ball around as if they had been playing together for a few years. Throughout the half we had numerous opportunities and finally with only minutes remaining Levi Van Rosi was brought down in the box resulting in a penalty, which Levi took successfully.
The boys were up one nil leading into half-time.
The second half commenced with the boys continuing on from where they left off as the end of the first half. With only minutes to go a defensive lapse occurred with Woodlawn getting in behind our defence and scoring a goal. The result being 1-1 at full-time.
Game 2 against Trinity College saw the boys take control from the start of the game with Hudson Bosnich gliding past the Trinity defence in the first few minutes and scoring a great goal which saw the team lead 1-0 going into half-time. The second half the boys began to become a little tired with our team only having two reserves. Trinity stepped up a gear, which saw them score three goals in the second half. Trinity College eventually won the game 3-1.
Game 3 was against Xavier College, Skennars Head. In an entertaining first half the boys once again scored first with Raen Santos scoring a brilliant goal in the first fifteen minutes. Once again we were winning going into the first half 1-0. The second half started with our team with only 11 players due to injuries that had occurred during the day.
The boys worked extremely hard throughout the second half and, with only a few second remaining, Xavier received a free kick just outside the box. this resulted in a goal in the last kick of the day the result being 1-1 at full-time.
I was extremely proud of the efforts of all on the team. A special mention Michael Todd whose defensive efforts were fantastic all day. Harold Hartwig-Costello played well in the midfield and up front throughout the day and Darcy Wills showed great agility in goals. Well done to the boys on a fantastic effort shown all day.

Open Girls soccer
On Wednesday 21st April, our Open Girls Football team travelled to Lismore to compete in the Northern Diocesan Carnival. Our team of 12 young players performed really well on the day.
The early start seemed to agree with the girls as we defeated Woodlawn 2-0 in our first game. Goals to Marly Kuramochi and Asha Pearson surprised our opponents with the girls deserving their victory in a very spirited performance.
Next we played a typically strong Trinity team and, although we kept with them for most of the game, a goal in the last few minutes saw Trinity emerge victorious 1-0.
It all caught up with us in our final game - having a small squad of mostly Year 8, 9 &10 girls up against large squads of senior girls - we were well beaten 4-0 by the eventual Carnival winners, Xavier College, Skennars Head.
Overall the girls can be really proud of their efforts - they were well led by Captain Elizabeth Warne and were fine ambassadors for the College.
Michael Acret (Coach)
GIRLS LEAGUE TAG
On Tuesday 27th April our Junior and Senior Girls League Tag teams competed in a Gala Day at the Brothers Fields in Murwillumbah where they competed against many local schools.
Although the 16s and Opens Girls were unsuccessful in coming out on top they played with extreme enthusiasm and passion in every game and even elected to play an optional game.
The 14s started the day with a win against Murwillumbah High School, winning by one try, but were unsuccessful in their next two games. The girls played with a great amount of team spirit and energy throughout the day.
Despite the scoreboard the students had a terrific day and finished in high spirits and can be commended on their dedication and sportsmanship.

ELECTRONIC PERMISSION FORMS
As regular readers of this report are aware, the College has moved to sending out electronic permission forms to parents this year. We have been experiencing teething problems with this new format and it was highlighted early this week when a large group email was sent with the permission form embedded into it and up to 30 emails bounced back as “failed” or not delivered. It was discovered that parents who have an email address that is a bigpond.com address were not receiving correspondence. Our IT people have discovered that Bigpond emails have a rather aggressive filter and will not accept an email with a form embedded into it.
As a result, parents will now be emailed correspondence with a clickable link which will then lead them to the permission form. If parents can complete and submit the problem should be resolved. Thanks for your assistance in this matter.
