MSPC Newsletter - Term 4, Week 10, 15th December 2023.
Principal
The Presentation Assembly on Tuesday afternoon 12th December was a great way to finish the school year. It was a time to acknowledge the great work of our students. An Academic Excellence acknowledges first place in a subject which is an extraordinary accomplishment. An Academic Merit is awarded by teachers to a student for various reasons. An Exemplary Behaviour award is awarded for outstanding behaviour and attendance. If you were not successful in obtaining one of these awards this year but you tried your best then you should be happy with your efforts and maybe you can work towards achieving one next year.
2023 has been a great year for MSPC. The shackles of a pandemic and the devastation of a flood were removed and we were almost back in full swing. Our students were able to attend face to face lessons every day. Excursions returned.
Thank you to our dedicated staff who left their families on many occasions to provide our students with amazing opportunities such as retreats, the Snow, Lady Musgrave, many trips to Sydney, face to face debating and the return of the Solomon Islands Immersion Program and Nepali trip.
Sporting opportunities have increased over the last 2 years with the introduction of integrated sport and the many trips away that provide our students lasting memories of being part of a team and the joy of competing against other schools.
The new 8 house system has added colour, fun activities and increased school spirit. Thank you to everyone for embracing this new structure.
We have had some extraordinary achievements this year in all arenas. The HSC cohort finished the school on a high with an amazing Graduation ceremony and Formal. The HSC results were released yesterday morning 14th December and the MSPC HSC students received 74 Band 6s across a range of subjects. 43 students have already received early offers to University, and TAFE credentials. We celebrated with Year 12 yesterday at a special morning tea.
I know that today will be the last day for many students at the College so I would like to wish those students all the best for their future. Remember today maybe the last day you are at the College as a Patties student but you will always be a Patties kid and I hope you have happy memories.
For returning students I wish you a peaceful and restful holiday with your family and hope you get an opportunity to attend a celebration at Church. We look forward to you returning to College on Wednesday 31st January for Year 7,11 and 12 or Thursday 1st February for Years 8-10. Please make sure you take the time to thank your teachers for all their efforts this year.
A number of staff members are finishing their association with Mt St Pats this year. Mr and Mrs Mark Hoy are retiring after many years of service to our community. Mr Hoy started in 1992 teaching Maths and constructing our timetable along with many contributions in Hockey, Cricket and many excursions. He was also a Year Co-ordinator for a long time.
Mrs Hoy started in 1997 as a Maths and Science Teacher and was also the Maths, Numeracy Co-ordinator and a Year Co-ordinator in her time. Mrs Hoy made many contributions to the College including excursions, retreats and lots of activities in her French classroom.
We wish them well for their retirement and congratulate them on the birth of their first grandchild. I am sure they will have a full and happy life ahead.
Mr Lill is also leaving us after a long association teaching Drama and English. Mr Lill offered many opportunities for our students in the Creative Arts department in particular directing our Musical this year. We wish him well.
Thank you to the following staff:
Mrs Bub-Connor for teaching Music, RE and all the extracurricular contributions in particular the Musical.
Miss Alex Lyster for teaching Maths and Sport and the many excursions that she attended.
Mr Nathan Jones in the HSIE and RE department. Thank you for your generosity in volunteering your time for the College.
Miss Ellen Hall, Miss Lucy Johnston, Mrs Virginia Black, Harry Sherrah, Halle McClymont, Eliza Blunn, Sidney Willis, Milly Keogh and Emma Loughman for their support work in the College.
We hope you will keep in contact and you enjoy the next chapter of your life.
Finally we thank Mr Reidy for his Leadership over the last 4 years and thank him for all his efforts in the community. We wish him all the best in Tasmania in his new role. We look forward to Mr Gavin Dykes joining us in 2024 as our new Principal.
I have been honoured to be the Acting Principal of the Best School in the Universe this term. Thank you for your support. Merry Christmas and May God bless you and keep you safe.

Supporting the mental health of a young person in distress
Simple intervention
1. Look for warning signs of distress (withdrawn, difficulty participating, irritability, easily overwhelmed, teary, shaky, fidgety, complaints of headaches, stomach aches, etc.) Where possible, act early.
2. Ask how they are, and if they need some space/ time away from group (chill out space)
3. Listening and having therapeutic conversations
- Reassure them of their safety- be emotionally available and present
- Normalise but don’t minimize or dismiss the intensity or importance of their feelings
- Create a shared story- explain/ confirm your understanding of what’s happening for them
- Provide any insight you have, draw on their strengths and likes. Encourage coping skills
- Follow up. Reinforce your care by checking in later
4. Promoting coping Skills
Distraction: re-direct their attention from distress to another activity.
- Focus on the present. Offer a cold/hot drink or something to eat. Chat about inane topics.
- Listen to music, draw/ colour in, write, do craft, play a game.
- Breathing exercises and relaxation techniques.
Crisis Support
If the young person is unable to regulate, or you have concerns about their emotional or physical safety- urgent supports are available. Please do not leave them alone.
Kids Helpline- 1800 55 1800
Mental Health Telephone Access Number- 1800 011 511

ENGLISH
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We are thrilled to share with you the remarkable journey that our Year 7 students embarked upon during the "Islands in the Sun" unit of work this term. As the Leader and Assistant Leader of English, respectively, we have had the privilege of witnessing their creative minds flourish, and we are excited to highlight some of their incredible achievements.
The journey began with Year 7s drafting their very own ideas for unique islands, each with its own captivating features and mysteries. They ventured deep into their imaginations, crafting these island settings with remarkable attention to detail, and creativity.
Following the island drafting phase, the students turned their focus to developing characters that would inhabit these vivid landscapes. These characters became the heart and soul of their island stories, each one brought to life with distinct personalities, aspirations, and challenges.
The culmination of this remarkable journey was their Semester 2 Examination, where our Year 7s put their island settings and characters to the test in a creative writing assessment. Their compositions showcased their exceptional storytelling abilities, demonstrating a deep understanding of narrative structure, characterisation, and figurative language.
The excitement did not end there. In the past two weeks following their examinations, our students embarked on a creative adventure, bringing their island settings to life in various imaginative ways. They explored art, design and multimedia presentations, to immerse themselves fully in the worlds they had created. The level of dedication and creativity displayed during this phase was truly impressive.
As we wrap up this unit, we want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to our Year 7 cohort for their outstanding efforts and creativity. This unit of work marked the end of an era, as it will be the last time we study "Islands in the Sun" with the current English Syllabus. Our Year 7 students certainly took it out with a bang, leaving their mark on this wonderful unit we have enjoyed teaching for many years.
We would like to express our gratitude to the Year 7 teachers: Corrie Tapsall, Jessica Vanderlight, Zoe Boxshall and Milly Keogh for guiding and inspiring our Year 7s throughout this term. We are immensely proud of our Year 7s and look forward to witnessing their continued growth and achievements in the years to come.

MUSIC
As the year draws to a close, the Spes Mea Choir and College Band have performed at a number of significant College events, wrapping up a fantastic year of music.
Firstly, the College Band and Choir, alongside the primary school band and choir, performed at the annual Sacred Heart Parish Christmas Tableau, singing a variety of Christmas carols to support the nativity presentation. This event is a staple in the Parish calendar, and one that the choir and band have been proud to be part of for many years. The students involved should all be proud of their contribution to this event, assisting the Parish to mark the beginning of the Advent season.
With the momentum of performance adrenaline behind them, the choir and band then launched into two intensive days, which provided students an opportunity to bond socially, while beginning to learn repertoire for 2024 performances. The days concluded with combined performances of ‘A Beautiful Day’ and ‘All Are Welcome’, proving a promising start for the 2024 program!
The choir were also involved in the End of Year Liturgy, marking the final week of the 2023 school year with several Christmas carols, leading the College in celebrating the year that has passed, and looking forward to the celebration of Christmas.
Outside of the choir and band, the College saw many phenomenal performances from a variety of students in the annual lunchtime concerts. Due to popular demand, this event required two days of performances, and all performers should be congratulated on their dedication and courage to perform for their peers.
As always, the music team would like to thank all students who have been involved in the music program this year - your enthusiasm, talent and passions are strong, and have provided much joy to the school and broader community in 2023. We thank you for your efforts, your concentration and your dedication to your craft, and look forward to another wonderful year in 2024.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Each year as part of the Year 7 Religious Education unit “Stewards of Creation”, project groups pitch ways they can help our school environment. This year, six very commendable ideas were pitched as finalists. We thank the Year 12 Environmental Leaders and the teachers that judged on the day.
Congratulations to Lucia, Nadia, Hector, Scarlett and Olive from Mrs. Waters and Mr. Jones’ 7B and 7C classes for their project “Sustainable Sauces’
Each week over 400 single use non-recyclable sauce sachets are used at the canteen, contributing to unnecessary landfill. The winning project team has used their $500 prize money to buy a trolley, sauce pumps and four-litre sauce bottles to use at the canteen. Students can serve their own sauce at the bottom of the stairs. Well done on a great initiative!
Thank you to the Year 10 Youth Ministry Class for donating $170 to Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Sharing KFC for lunch with the Ministry Officers, Eliza and Halle, these students generously contributed to others in our community who may be struggling.

COLLEGE SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Our annual College Swimming Carnival will take place on Friday 2nd February. This is the first week of school. It is a compulsory day of attendance and a great way to kick off our year and boost our College spirit.
Students are reminded that it is a $3 entry into the pool. This is to be paid on arrival. Could I please ask for the correct change, it makes things so much faster. Senior students can arrive directly to the pool from 8am onwards.
If you travel to school via buses please do so but DO NOT get off downtown. Alight as normal at school and make your way to the Canteen Basement and staff will walk groups down to TRAC.
Please have all clothing items labelled with your name on them and enter into the spirit of the day by dressing in your house colours. Don't forget your College hat. Also apply sunscreen upon arrival and reapply regularly. Each House Leader will have sunscreen.
Competitors will be asked to wear a swim cap of their house colour in each race. These will be available from their House leader and MUST be returned after the race. There will be 4 championship races per age group per event. Those students vying for an age championship need to be in one of those four heats.
Please note that our entire College community does not fit in the grandstand. A roster system was established last year and the following is the seating arrangements for 2024:
A gentle reminder that our College has a swimwear policy and all are asked to make themselves familiar with this and dress accordingly on the day of the carnival.
For all water, swimming and aquatic activities the following MSPC swimwear policy has been adopted. Hopefully this will make it clear what attire is safe and appropriate at College events and activities. The policy will now apply to students currently participating in water activities for Sport and for upcoming excursions and carnivals involving swimming.
We want all students to be able to participate in aquatic activities safely and modestly. We are concerned about students’ physical and emotional wellbeing.
Prohibited apparel includes: non-swimming shirts, running shorts, compression tights, athletic shorts, undergarments, denim shorts, string bikinis, swimmers not covering cheeks, triangles, thongs and Brazilian cut swimwear. These garments are either considered unsafe for water and aquatic activities or inappropriate due to their revealing nature. The aim is for everyone to have fun, participate and enjoy aquatic games and activities.
DIOCESAN SWIMMING CARNIVAL
The Diocesan Swimming Carnival will take place in Port Macquarie in 2024 on March 7th. Mt St Patrick will not be sending a team bus as in previous years this was poorly supported as most competitive swimmers chose to travel the night before the carnival to get sufficient rest.
Please be advised if you have a talented swimmer and you are confident they will make it to Diocesan level you may want to look at accommodation availability. There will be staff representatives at the carnival as team manager and also performing roles at the carnival. All swimmers are to report to Mr and Mrs Van Den Driest upon arrival. These are the only team representatives who can approach Carnival officials on the day.

Students can now make canteen purchases with their student card!
Setting up payments using Flexischools, so that your student can use their School ID Card to purchase at the Canteen.
We have partnered with Flexischools to allow students to use the existing student library ID card to make payments at the canteen. This service has been implemented to give students a safe and secure way to pay at school and also avoid mobile phone usage. Parents use the Flexischools app to add funds to their digital wallet and link this account to the student’s existing student card. Parents can optionally setup daily spending limits and automated top-ups for additional peace of mind. Students then scan their cards at the canteen (the [if photo option] student photo and) balance appears on the terminal, and the transaction is charged to the card. Parents can track the student’s spending via the Flexischools App. The first 50 students to use the service will receive a free Zooper Dooper when they use their ID card for the first time.
Parents can setup their Flexischools account at https://www.flexischools.com.au or by downloading the Flexischools app from the Apple or Google app stores.
We encourage parents to consider using this service to help us create a safer, more efficient school payment experience.
