Confession

St Patrick was born in Britain towards the end of the fourth century. When he was sixteen, he was captured from his father’s country estate and taken to Ireland as a slave along with ‘many thousands of others’.  At that time, he ‘did not know the true God,’ but turned to God in his despair.

After six years in captivity, Patrick escaped and returned to his homeland.  Shortly after arriving home the voice of the Irish summoned him. ‘…. young man, come and walk among us once more.’

Patrick answered the call several decades later.  His mission was dangerous and difficult and generated much criticism from his fellow Bishops.   In response, Patrick wrote the Confession, a statement that defended his actions and acknowledged the work of God in his life.

St Patrick baptised ‘many thousands’ and is one of the most successful and well known missionaries in history.  He died in Ireland on the 17th March, possibly in the year 493.
